Fireplace Door: More than Just a Cover

Just about every fireplace has a fireplace door but today, with improved technology and style, you can choose something that looks great but also helps with the heating of the room.  Remember that the type of fireplace door chosen will depend largely on the type of fireplace. For instance, a masonry fireplace would need a different fitting door than a corner unit. Regardless, the key is choosing something you like but also a door that offers safety and efficiency.

Today, people look for any way possible for making the home more efficient. With the cost of heating up, using a fireplace has become a popular solution. However, to make your fireplace work for you, it might be that a few changes are needed to include the fireplace door. For instance, glass doors are one of the most popular choices and for good reason. Tempered glass is designed to reduce airflow, which means less heat escapes up and out the chimney. The result is a warmer home from the heat of the fireplace.

When choosing a glass fireplace door, you will find there are four primary components involved. First, the door will have a frame that is adjustable with vents or intake slots. Second, there is the interior screen, which helps keep sparks and embers from escaping. Third are the anchor bolts or brackets that keep the frame securely in place. Finally, you have the tempered glass itself, which is designed to handle the heat but also make your fireplace more efficient.

With the glass fireplace door, you could leave the door open or shut during a fire but keep in mind that with the door closed you maintain better control over the fire. On the other hand, the door closed would mean the amount of radiant heat transferred into the room would be decreased. Therefore, the choice to burn a fire with the fireplace door open or close really depends on what is important to you – loss of radiant heat versus controlled air movement going up the chimney.

One of the most important aspects of any fireplace door has to do with safety, especially if you have small children in the home. This means making sure the doors cannot be opened easily. In fact, most parents would choose to keep the fire burning with the door shut in the case of children being in the home for obvious reasons. With the glass being made from tempered glass, which is also known as “safety glass”, you get the best possible strength, something that can handle the heat without breakage. The difference with this type of glass fireplace door is that if it should break, it would shatter into many tiny pieces that almost crumble, over shards that could cause serious damage.
