Fireplace Construction for Beginners

Fireplaces serve the practical purposes of heating, cooking, as well as creating a very comfortable atmosphere in the winter for families. They also serve the growing demand of increasing the value of properties, something that a lot of people are eager to exploit. Therefore, fireplace construction is an area of home improvement that is growing rapidly in importance.

There are literally hundreds of fireplace construction designs and styles of fireplace out there. It is also possible for fireplace construction to be made from a huge variety of materials. However, all fireplaces utilise a couple of common principles and will work in the same way. Therefore, if you know the basics of fireplace construction, you will have a good grounding for building whatever type of fireplace you wish.

The most important feature of fireplace construction is the shape of the chamber. Fireplaces heat the cool air in the room which will then rise. Cool air is also sucked from the chimney feeding the fire with oxygen and allowing gases and smoke to escape. You need to make sure that air will be drawn down the chimney, that the smoke goes up the chimney, but that the heat circulates in your room and does not all go right up the chimney. This is the most important aspect of fireplace construction. If you get this right, the rest of the project is really just decorative, and making sure that the construction is durable enough to withstand the heat that is created.

You will need to get some blueprints or design notes on effective fireplace construction if you are going to make sure that your fireplace operates correctly. You will also need to take into account the size of the room you are heating and the heating needs of your house. As well as this, there is the important matter which is the shape of the room. Because of the way the air circulates, you will need to make sure that any fireplace you construct will function in the shape of room you are working with.

You should make sure that all blue prints and specifications are adhered to. While you are trying to create an efficient and economical fireplace, you also must make sure that it will be safe. Heat resistance is an obvious issue with all materials you use in fireplace construction so make sure that you only use materials that are certified for use in fireplaces.

You must also be careful to adhere to all measurement and dimensions in the design of your fireplace construction. You are not simply building a hole for smoke to escape. If you want to make sure that decent heat is generated, and that you do not create the costly mistake of causing smoke to enter your room, then you should adhere strictly to measurements. The opening of the firebox should also be the correct size.

You should also remember to perform a smoke test before you use any fireplace to make sure that the fireplace is safe to use. Smoke is the most dangerous aspect of any new fireplace and is a good method for testing your fireplace construction so you can make adjustments as needed.
