There are a few things in life that seem to always bring pleasure and feeling of relaxation. Many people say that there are three things that all people find soothing and that mankind will always derive relaxation and pleasure from. These are the look and sound of running water, looking at the stares, and watching a fire burn. Perhaps it goes back to our ancient roots, but there really is nothing like having your own wood fireplace which you can look into and enjoy for hours and hours.
Wood fireplaces are a part of our history, and no matter from which culture or country you come from, your ancestors will most likely have had a wood fireplace in their home. It is little wonder therefore that so many people say they enjoy the smell and sound of a wood fire and most of all, they enjoy staring into the flames of the wood fireplace and letting the effect hypnotise them.
Wood fireplaces are really making a come back too. From traditional country farm houses, to city penthouse apartments, it seems as if everyone these days wants to have a wood fireplace in their home. Home builders are reporting that there are more requests for wood fireplaces in new homes than for virtually any other internal feature and many people who are just thinking of selling their homes are finding that it pays dividends to install a wood fireplace as they will be able to sell their home for a much higher price.
So what is it that is causing everyone to crave their own wood fireplaces all of a sudden? Many people say that we have been alienated from our surroundings to such an extent in modern life that we are searching for ways to reconnect to nature. Many people live in concrete buildings on concrete streets, they take the car or a commuter train to work, spend the day in an air conditioned office, return home, relax, watch a movie or go out for a drink, and then fall asleep. The average day contains more convenience, and is more productive than ever before, but at the same time, there is very little interaction with our physical surroundings and with nature. We don’t have to walk through fields, dig earth, cut wood, many people don’t even cut grass anymore because they don’t have a garden.
Having a wood fireplace is a chance to reconnect with nature. You can cut the wood or carry it home, load up the fireplace, set the fire and nurture it, and then watch it burn, listen to the sound it makes and smell the smoke. It offers a degree of connection with our surroundings that more and more people are craving in our modern world.
